Why we built it

Made for schools that don't usually get new technology first.

Most school technology needs fast internet, a device for every learner, and a monthly fee. Most South African schools don't have these things. RetroEd works differently: just one laptop, a set of buzzers, and thousands of curriculum questions — no internet needed, ever.

It feels less like homework and more like a real game show — so learners actually look forward to revising.

  • 💻
Works on one laptopNo internet, no extra software, and nothing to install on learners' devices.
  • 🔴
Buzzers for everyoneFour wireless buzzers mean every learner can join in — not just whoever is holding a tablet.
  • 🗣️
Reads questions aloudEvery question is read out loud, in English and Afrikaans — so learners who find reading hard aren't left behind.
The whole setup

Three steps. No IT department required.

A teacher can go from "never used it" to running a full quiz round in a single lunch break.

STEP 01
💻

Open it on your laptop

RetroEd is just one app. Pick a grade, subject and term, and you're ready to play — no account, no download, no wifi needed.

STEP 02
🔘

Learners answer with buzzers

Four coloured buzzers — one per team — connect to the laptop by themselves. Nothing to pair, and the batteries last, so there's no charging mid-lesson.

STEP 03
▶️

You just press play

Pick from seven fun game modes — like fast-paced Speed Buzz or Reading Comprehension — and let the scoreboard do the rest.

About RetroEd

RetroEd is built by Jason, under JLS Music trading as RetroEd. The idea is simple: build easy-to-use technology that works without the internet or a power socket, for people who don't usually get new tools first — but sell it to anyone who wants it.

RetroEd is the first of a few products built on that same idea — more coming soon.
